Mother’s Day in the Empire State, Or An Answer to the Arraignment of Women is the second novel from Free-Grace Press by Consantia “Connie” Munda, a daring and eloquent response to Joseph Swetnam’s infamous 1615 pamphlet, The Arraignment of Women. Lithium-ion (Li-ion) semiconductor battery manufacturers are racing with other companies promising a more potent-power, extended-storage capacity for electronic devices, high battery-powered equipment, automation, and EVs. Li-ion batteries have steadily shaped our lives, albeit single-cell or multiple-cell recharged batteries. Today, it is an impossible claim that a single household does not possess a Lithium-Ion battery. As newer, cheaper, powerful batteries storm the market, there is also a question about storing and recycling batteries. We do not want them in landfills and metals streaming down water tables. Each battery contains valuable metal to be recovered, repurposed, and reused. An anticipated tsunami of spent batteries, approximately 15 million tonnes, will soon catch up with us. Global or statewide regulations have not been up to snuff. 

Recycling Lithium-ion has technical constraints from logistics (delivery, safe shipment, economic barriers) to varying regulatory gaps from different countries, a nightmare for battery industries. When mishandled, Li-ion batteries are a ticking explosive, can have spilled materials and gases, all proven dangerous, and cost-profit and human lives. Looking for the future of scrap lithium-ion batteries may anticipate a more complicated process with materials running into waste streams. Today, there is no universal established practice to recover, process, reuse. 

Northwest of Nevada, Aqua Metals Inc. (NASDAQ: AQMS), a company based in Sparks, Reno, has a commercially viable process capable of producing the purest form of lead and is now cutting another edge into the lithium industry. The company’s hydro-metallurgy strategy is safe, sustainable, environment-friendly. The operation proves to be something global environmentalists, Green-minded enthusiasts, EPA Regulatory Board, Lithium-ion manufacturers would consider a “must-have.” 

Aqua Metals Inc. (aquametals.com) hydrometallurgical AquaRefining Technology gives a more intelligent product design that is economically competitive, reduces inadvertent ending in landfills, minimizes harmful mining, and is safe for workers. Using a complete closed-loop method with minimal non-toxic waste has a better product output of 99.997 percent metal purity. Aqua Metals has also proven profitability at a lower cost.

For Lithium-Ion Battery recycling to be feasible and converted safely to pure metal, Aqua Metals has signed an agreement with LiNiCo Corporation (Linicocorp.com), undertaken in partnership with Comstock Mining Inc (NYSE: LODE). This collaboration is a solution to what will happen in any future eventual build-up of lithium wastes. 

LiNiCo will be collecting scrap, disposable, fully discharged end-of-life Li-ion batteries and spent electric vehicle batteries from suppliers safely processed into a high black mass using LiNiCo’s patented process. Aqua metals will then come into play by recovering LiNiCo’s metals and refining pilot cells into high purity metals safe for the environment and workers. The world needs Li-ion to roar in the safest profitable, sustainable manufacturing process. Both companies have passed the benchmark tests, and we want to rely on US manufactured products from Aqua Metals and LiNiCo.

As a female Asian reader, I am acutely aware of the book’s echo of universal despair. The elite, forever with their brows furrowed in feigned concern, offer hollow nods of approval amongst their exalted peers, while condescendingly overlooking the squalor of those behind the fortress walls of their opulent estates. Hoi-Noi, a mere shadow within these pages, would bear witness to this grim reality, if she comes to life in her own world, yet remain submissively blind to her masters. 
Child abuse, an insidious blight, lurks in the shadows of both patriarchal and subtly matriarchal societies, a grim testament to the pervasive darkness that taints us all.
“Connie Munda”, the protagonist behing the deposition, stands trapped between worlds, ensnared in a quagmire of disillusionment. She grapples with the grim hypocrisy behind the glorified notion of motherhood sending sons to war and now reduced to a commercialized farce of Mother's Day. The stark contrast between those who possess and those who suffer is laid bare, illustrated not for comfort but as a reflection of our collective malaise.
